Brussels – 26 March 2004. UNDSG Louise Fréchette will have a series of meetings with high-level European officials, both in Strasbourg and Brussels. The purpose of the visit is to follow-up on the Secretary-General’s trip in January 2004 and to review and develop further areas of cooperation between the UN and the EU.
On 29 and 30 March 2004, she will have meetings in Strasbourg with President Pat Cox of the European Parliament and with Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission. UNDSG will aslo meet with EU Commissioners Chris Patten, Erkki Liikanen, Pascal Lamy, Margot Wallström and Poul Nielson. She will also have meetings with Mr. Elmar Brok, Chairman of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defence Policy and Armin Laschet, Member of the European Parliament, who issued a report on EU-UN relations.
On 31 March and 1 April 2004, UNDSG Fréchette will meet with Robert Cooper, Director-General at the Council of the European Union and the Irish Permanent Representative, Ambassador Anne Anderson, in Brussels. She will also participate in a meeting organized by the Political and Security Committee of the EU.
The same day, UNDSG Fréchette will be the key speaker at a Forum organized at the European Policy Centre. The theme of the Forum is: the UN Reform, Challenges for the UN.
Before leaving Brussels for Vienna, USDSG Fréchette will meet Alessandro Minuto Rizzo, Deputy Secretary-General of NATO.
